Ebonyi CAN Issues Strong Statement on Ogboji Killing, Commends Gov. Nwifuru’s Swift Intervention

In response to the unfortunate killing of thirteen Ebonyi people at Ogboji in Orumba South LGA of Anambra State, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN in Ebonyi State has condemned the barbaric act.

Addressing the press on the issue, CAN Ebonyi State Chapter, led by His Eminence Rt. Rev. Dr. Scamb Chinedum Nwokolo in strong terms condemned the tragic killing of the 13 Ebonyi indigenes residing in Ogboji Anambra State, and described the incident which also left several others injured as heartbreaking.

CAN at the press briefing, expressed profound dismay and sorrow over the senseless act that took place on the evening of June 30, 2025.

“This shocking event is deeply regrettable, barbaric, and signals a perilous regression to a state of nature where humanity’s most fundamental rights are disregarded,” the CAN Chairman said

The leaders referenced the philosopher Thomas Hobbes, likening the violence to a scenario where man becomes a wolf to his fellow man, leading to a community where life is “short, brutish, and nasty.”

The Association criticized the audacity of the attackers, questioning how any individual could contemplate such a heinous act against innocent and unarmed individuals. They highlighted that this brazen attack reflects a serious disregard for morality, law, and the sanctity of human life. “It is disheartening and calls for immediate action by government authorities at all levels in Nigeria,” the statement urged, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive overhaul and strengthening of the nation’s security architecture.

CAN in Ebonyi State described the crime as grievous, deserving both divine and secular punishment. They referenced the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 26, verse 52, which states, “those who live by the sword shall die by the sword,” illustrating the moral weight they attribute to this act of violence.

In their moment of grief, the organization extended heartfelt condolences to the Government and the people of Ebonyi State, particularly to the families of those who lost loved ones in the attack. They commended Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s Swift Intervention and call for calm to advert any represail attack

“We pray that God grants them strength to endure this tragic loss,” they expressed, acknowledging the profound sorrow felt by the community.

Additionally, the Christian Association called on the Government of Anambra State to take swift action to ensure that the perpetrators of this heinous act are brought to justice. They also urged the government to implement measures to support the bereaved families, recognizing that while no compensation can truly substitute for the loss of a loved one, assistance to alleviate their burden is essential.

The association appealed to the people of Anambra, encouraging solidarity and a collective effort toward combating the rising tide of violence in the region. The call for unity and action reflects a desperate plea for peace amid the grief and unrest that has befallen the communities affected by this tragic incident.
