In recognition of his contributions to sports and youth development, Ikwo Local Government Chairman, Chief Barr Sunday Basil Nwankwo was among the few recipients of Ebonyi Sports Development Award from Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Ebonyi State. The Award was presented on Thursday 3rd April 2025 in Abakaliki at the Grand Finale of the 2025 Sports Writers Week held at Former Parliamentarians Multipurpose hall Abakaliki.
According to SWAN, the award was in recognition of the Chairman and other sports stakeholders commitment and positive impact in the area of sports development, especially in Ikwo LGA.

They noted that his annual sponsorship of Ikwo LGA Chairmanship tournament among twenty wards in the Council in collaboration with Ikwo Youths Consultative Forum as well as his regular support to Ikwo male and female football team in their competitive matches were commendable.
Recall that through the Chairman’s support, Ikwo under 19 women football team recently emerged runners-up in Her Excellency the Wife of the Governor Football Tournament for the 13 LGAs in the state.
Barr Nwankwo who was present at the event, thanked Sports Writers for the honour and pledged to continue to support sporting activities and youth development in Ikwo LGA.
Others who bagged similar awards at the event include Senator Peter Nwebonyi, Senator Obinna Ogba, Engr. Darlington Ugota, Hon. Victor Nwoke, Prince Richard Idike, Dr Onyechi Nwankwo among others
